How can I choose the correct PoE switch of Bosch IP cameras based on the IEEE Standard?
Question
How can I choose the correct PoE switch of Bosch IP cameras based on the IEEE Standard?
Answer
The IEEE standards in computer networks ensure communication between various devices; it also helps to make sure that the network service, i.e., the Internet and its related technologies, must follow a set of guidelines and practices so that all the networking devices can communicate and work smoothly.
Depending on the camera model, the PoE IEEE standard used could be different. This information can be found in the Datasheet of the camera, next to the Power/ Electrical section.
For example, the FLEXIDOME indoor 5100i camera supports IEEE 802.3af/ 802.3at Type 1:
While the AUTODOME IP starlight 5100i IR camera supports IEEE802.3bt, Type 3 standard:
MIC IP starlight 7100i camera is not IEEE 802.3bt complaint. It works on the older HDBaseT POH standard (Defined by the HDBasT Alliance).
- It will never work with a NPD-6001-I bt Midspan and it cannot be modified in any manner to work with a bt midspan.
- The Bosch NPD-6001-I (Microchip PD-9501GCI/DC) does not support the HDBaseT POH standard. This midspan is not listed as one of the compatible midspans on the MIC cameras Data Sheets.
- Note that in case you will try to get the MIC camera to connect as AF, you will not be able to control the camera. You will never be able to Pan/Tilt the MIC with only 12.95 W.
- The PoE midspan for industrial applications enables remote PoE power for Bosch IP cameras that support the IEEE 802.3bt standard. Please always check the camera Data Sheet for compatibility with this standard.
- Therefore, for a MIC IP starlight 7100i camera you must purchase NPD-9501A or NPD-9501-E in order to use the High PoE solution:
With the new 802.3bt standard come two new options: Type 3 and Type 4. Type 3 is also called 4-pair PoE, 4PPoE, PoE++, or UPoE. It provides 60 W of power per port and is ideal for video conferencing equipment, multi-radio wireless access points, PTZ cameras, and building management devices.
Name | IEEE Standard | Power to Powered Device (PD) | Max. Power per Port | Energized Pairs | Supported Devices |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
PoE | IEEE 802.3af | 12.95 W | 15.4 W | 2-pair | Static surveillance cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points |
PoE+ | IEEE 802.3at | 25.5 W | 30 W | 2-pair | PTZ cameras, video IP phones, alarm systems |
High PoE | IEEE 802.3at* | 25.5 W | 30 W | 2-pair | * |
PoE++ | IEEE 802.3bt (Type 3) | 51 W | 60 W | 4-pair | Video conferencing equipment, multi-radio wireless access points |
PoE++ | IEEE 802.3bt (Type 4) | 71.3 W | 100 W | 4-pair | Laptops, flat screens |
PoH | IEEE (NA) HDBaseT |
| 100 W | 4-pair The pairs of the midspan must be combined so as follows and these are the polarities used by the Bosch cameras. 1. Data Pairs: (Pins 1/2) and (pins 3/6) for 10/100 Ethernet 3. The cameras do meet the standard for polarity reversal protection (Internal bridge rectifier). | Applicable to the following Bosch Camera models: VG5-7000 & MIC 7000, MIC 7000i, MIC7100i, and MIC 9000i |
*For models with attached illuminators, use the 95 W midspan sold by Bosch. For models without illuminators, use the 60 W midspan sold by Bosch, or a midspan that is compliant to the IEEE 802.3at, class 4 standard

Note: The IEEE standard specifically related to Power over HDBaseT (PoH) is not available.
The HDBaseT Alliance is responsible for establishing and promoting the HDBaseT technology, including its power delivery capabilities. The HDBaseT standard allows for the transmission of uncompressed audio and video, control signals, Ethernet, and power over a single Cat 5e/6/6a cable.
