What is Intelligent Video Analytics IVA & when to use it (resolution, real-life calculation & frame rate)?
Question
What is Intelligent Video Analytics IVA & when to use it (resolution, real-life calculation & frame rate)?
Answer
Bosch Intelligent Video Analytics is a video analytics type delivered as standard with Bosch IP 7000 to 9000 series with CPP7.3 and older. Furthermore, it does include a hardware accelerator to provide some extra power.

Resolution
The resolution of Intelligent Video Analytics is different from the IP camera output as it is being processed separately, and sub-samples the video before the encoder processes it.
The Intelligent Video Analytics resolution depends on:
- Camera platform
- Camera type
- Firmware version
- Intelligent Video Analytics settings
CPP6, CPP7 FW< 6.30:
CPP6, CPP7, CPP7.3FW < 6.30 & double detection inactive:
CPP6, CPP7, CPP7.3 FW ≥ 6.30 & double detection active:
Real-life calculation Intelligent Video Analytics
- Detection resolution: 320 x 180 pixels
- Horizontal meter/pixel: 30 / 320 ≈ 0.17 m/pixel
- Minimum horizontal size: 5 x 0.17 ≈ 0.85 meter.
Note: The resolution calculation is more complicated because:
- The distance resolution is best near the camera (1 pixel represents a smaller area of ground)
- In the distance the resolution degrades because 1 pixel can represent several meters of ground
Frame Rates
The Video Analytics frame rate depends on the maximum frame rate provided by the camera sensor.
When to use?
Intelligent Video Analytics will fit most in:
- Large environments: the detection distance for Intelligent Video Analytics is considerably bigger when double detection distance is active.
- Extreme weather conditions: the camera has a separate chip for VCA processing the algorithm can react better under certain situations, such as: shaking cameras, heavy rain and snow, moving vegetation (noise suppression strong) heavy waves (ship tracking mode), etc.
Typical applications for Intelligent Video Analytics environments are tailored for mission critical applications. Delivering extremely reliable video analytics even under the most adverse circumstances.
Typical application tasks for Intelligent Video Analytics are:
- Perimeter protection: airports, critical infrastructure, government buildings, jails, industry
- Border patrol
- Harbor, canal & coast surveillance
- Traffic monitoring: enforce no-parking zones, wrong-way detection, monitor roadside for broken cars, traffic counts
- Protection valuable assets (museum): alarm on touch or removal
- People counting, occupancy, queue & crowd detection
